Perhaps! New studies are providing positive results the foods you eat can dramatically reduce your odds of suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
The Canadian Brain Health Food Guide study, one from the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, and the Chan School of Public Health at Harvard are producing separate but similar positive studies.
The diets point toward often discussed healthy eating habits that include “mostly plant based foods, whole grains, beans, nuts, vegetable oils and fish”. It is believed this type of diet will protect cells in the brain while fighting inflammation and oxidation.
The Canadian study associated with a Mediterranean diet reflected a 36 percent reduction the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. University Medical Center in Chicago, and the Public Health Center at Harvard lowered the risk by a whopping 53 percent.
The diets do have some differences. The Canadian does not have a specific grain consumption per day, while the other two require three servings. The Canadian calls for four servings of fruit, the other only five half-cup portions of berries per week.
The bottom line sounds eerily familiar; whole grains, beans, nuts, vegetable oils and fish. We suggest these are generally healthier than many other foods, and now we have additional information that you can dramatically reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
And what should you avoid? Again, no surprises, we’ve heard it often….reduce or avoid saturated fats found in pastries, sweets, butter, red meat and fried and processed foods. Dairy products don’t seem to have an effect, but use the low-fat products.
Wow! Yet more studies that support a healthy diet can immensely benefit one.
