What do we know? We know that magnesium sulfate, the main ingredient in Epsom salts, does promote healthy muscle function and recovery after exercise. However, there isn’t any evidence that a liberal dose of Epsom salts in your bath water during a good body soak will actually be absorbed into your muscles.
The good news is simply soaking in warm water can increase circulation, and that may speed healing and reduce your brains perception of pain. There is also evidence that moist heat works faster than dry heat, such as a heating pad.
Bottom line, Epsom salts can’t hurt, but no evidence that it helps. But, we know that a hot soaking bath feels really good after a workout, or just as a bad day remedy.
