“Here’s the skinny on store-bought salads — many are packed with a belt-popping number of calories, new data collected by The NY Post reveal.
Several thought-to-be-waist-slimming salads at restaurants in the Big Apple actually contain 700 to 1,200 calories a pop, more than a Big Mac (563) or a Whopper (677), according to nutritional information provided by the restaurants.
“It’s shocking how little people know about salads. It drives home the point that most salads are overloaded with fat and calories,” said nutritionist Ariane Hundt.
A Cobb salad with dijon vinaigrette at Chop’t ($10.99), for example, weighs in at 700 calories, according to the restaurant’s site. It would take an average person roughly 3.5 hours of Pilates to burn that off, experts said.
Fresh & Co.’s South Beach Salad ($10.25), which contains walnuts, chicken and apples with honey balsamic is even more gut-busting, at 900 calories, according to the restaurant’s site. It would take about 1 hour and 40 minutes of spinning to burn off those calories.
And Bareburger’s large Berry Blue salad ($14.95), which contains blueberries and bleu cheese, is a hefty 1,220 calories, which would take roughly one hour of CrossFit to burn off, according to the restaurant’s data.
Salads can be healthy and slimming — but there are land mines.
“The worst offenders are anything sugary — candied pecans or walnuts — and dressings. Often, you can tell it’s sugary, if it has a fruity name,” Hundt said.
Other salads examined by The Post include the OMG Omega ($13.50) from Sweet Green, which contains avocado and miso dressing and contains 555 calories, and the Mediterranean Mix ($8.69) from Just Salad, which has 534.
The only eatery to respond to requests for comment was Just Salad, which said, “We would also like to point out that it’s not just about calorie counting, but rather the quality of ingredients that our customers consume, and the nutritional benefits of the overall meal.”
