Diagnostic X-rays are performed by positioning the area of the body to be examined between a focused, high-energy beam and a plate containing film. After the X-rays pass through the body, they strike the photographic plate and interact with silver molecules on the film’s surface. When the film plates are processed, dense structures like bones appear white, soft tissues show up as shades of gray, and airspaces look black. A radiologist (a physician with specific training in interpreting diagnostic X-rays) analyzes the images and then reports back to the ordering physician. Typically, this process takes only a few minutes to complete.

A physician may order one or more X-rays to:
