The flu vaccine must be produced far in advance of the flu season. And, it is reformulated each year to reflect the strain of flu that is anticipated. To be specific, this year it was produced to match the H3N2 virus. Once produced and in use, the flu virus mutated slightly, thus evading the immunization for which it had been designed.
In a normal year, the flu vaccine only eliminates about 63% of flu strains. This year it is only 23%….far less.
So why bother? It still eliminates 25,000 flu related hospitalizations, kids benefit more than adults, some geographic areas benefit more than others, and it still prevents the original strain for which it was designed.
Importantly, the “herd” aspect applies….the more people who get the shot, the less likely of the flu spreading.
First Care highly recommends that patients be vaccinated. You don’t need an appointment, just walk-in and be on your way in minutes.
